SITE DESCRIPTION

The PICUBASICS mnemonic was developed by pediatric chronic care and critical care specialists at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY, and the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY to assist with the diagnosis and management of acute illness in children who have chronic conditions. The PICUBASICS mnemonic can also be used to identify avoidable morbidity in children who have chronic conditions and to improve the quality of their chronic health care.

The ten PICUBASICS categories include biomedical as well as psychosocial and system level factors that may contribute to acute illness in children who have chronic conditions:

  1. Pharmacy
  2. Implantable Devices/Assistive Technology
  3. Condition-specific Complications
  4. Unmet Service Needs
  5. Behavior
  6. Abuse
  7. Sedation
  8. Information Sharing
  9. Calories/Nutrition
  10. Support Family Caregivers

FEATURES OF THE PICUBASICS WEBSITE

The PICUBASICS website provides Internet links to resources for each of the PICUBASICS categories. A PICUBASICS checklist can be downloaded from the website to generate a patient-specific problem list and to coordinate discharge planning. The Emergency Information Form for Children with Special Health Care Needs (developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Emergency Physicians) can also be downloaded from the PICUBASICS website. The goal of the PICUBASICS project is to promote information sharing between acute and chronic health care providers.
